Unfortunately, hard times hit this ski resort in the 1990s. Wind-storm damage closed it for several years. New owners reopened the ski area in 1999, but the Nordic operation has been slow to reach its full potential. Currently, only short trails near the ski lodge are groomed. The ski area has two cross-country trail systems. The lower system, which once had three groomed loops, is north of the ski lodge, in the woods below the alpine ski runs. The Stagecoach Loop is the only trail currently in use in the lower system. The upper trails are on a plateau 400 feet above the lodge. Olympic cross-country ski team trained on this plateau in the 1950s. They could not have picked a more scenic training course. Skiers here are treated to views of the surrounding Blue Mountains, the distant Wallowa Mountains, and the Seven Devils in Idaho. There are 6 miles of trails on this plateau, but they have not been groomed since trees fell across some of the trails during a windstorm in November 2000. When these trails were groomed, a trail pass ($12 in 2000) included one chairlift ride to the plateau, eliminating a long uphill climb from the ski lodge. The upper trails are well worth a visit.
